Family Connection

“Children are a heritage from
the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” – Psalm 127:3, NIV
Susan’s oldest daughter was
starting high school in the fall and her younger children would be moving into
middle school. Susan knew that time to connect with and minister her kids was
about to become limited.
“As kids grow, they have less
time. They’re busy preparing for the next stage of life and I want that for my
kids. But I also know that means I need to be intentional about building family
connections.”
So Susan started a weekly
family dinner on Thursday nights. It was the one night of the week that no one
had plans. The meals she picks are easy—often going for a theme like build your
own pizza, design your sub, or create a salad. Each child customizes their dish
and they get to spend time together as a family.
It’s hard to keep family
connections strong when so many things are pulling us apart. But making time
together—even if it’s just once a week—is so important. It keeps your family
strong and connected.
Of course, that doesn’t mean
every meal will be perfect. Susan’s kids sometimes argue, bicker and tease one
another. It’s moments like that Susan tries to slow down and discuss the
importance of kindness with her kids.
God, please strengthen my bond with my kids. They’re
preparing for the next stage of life and I love that they’re becoming more
independent. But I want to be intentional about this season of their lives.
Show me how to pour more grace and love into them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
